HEAT WAVE is a STANDALONE contemporary ROMANCE from the NYT bestselling author of The Pact and Love, in English

"Her family will do everything to keep them apart. He'll do whatever it takes to make her his. You'll be frantically flipping the pages to which side wins in this steamy, sultry forbidden romance." - NYT bestselling author Jay Crownover.

They say when life closes one door, another one opens.
This door happens to lead to paradise.
And a man I can never, ever have.

Still grieving the loss of her sister who died two years ago, the last thing Veronica "Ronnie" Locke needed was to lose her job at one of Chicago’s finest restaurants and have to move back in with her parents. So when a window of opportunity opens for her – running a kitchen at a small Hawaiian hotel – she’d be crazy not to take it.

The only problem is, the man running the hotel drives her crazy
Logan Shephard.
It doesn’t matter that he’s got dark brown eyes, a tall, muscular build that’s sculpted from daily surfing sessions, and a deep Australian accent that makes your toes curl.
What does matter is that he’s a grump.
Kind of an asshole, too.
And gets under Ronnie’s skin like no one else.

But the more time Ronnie spends on the island of Kauai, falling in love with the lush land and its carefree lifestyle, the closer she gets to Logan. And the closer she gets to Logan, the more she realizes she may have pegged him all wrong. Maybe it’s the hot, steamy jungles or the invigorating ocean air, but soon their relationship becomes utterly intoxicating.

There’s just one major catch.

The two of them together would incite a scandal neither Ronnie, nor her family, would ever recover from.

Forbidden, Illicit, Off-limits – sometimes the heat is worth surrendering to, even if you get burned.

NOTE Heat Wave is a complete standalone romance. There is no cheating or adultery in this book, but there is coarse language and explicit sex. Reader discretion is advised!!

Spoilers!

I enjoyed this book a lot. Deeply romantic and great writing. But it missed a 5-star for me because I just don't think hooking up with your ex-BIL is such a morally reprehensible, shocking thing. A tad eyebrow-raising, perhaps, but really, there are a lot worse things in this world. And if the H and h don't have a problem with it (Veronica especially), then let's just move on and let them live their lives. But every person they told was shocked. Not one said, "Pffft, whatever." Really? The people in my world would.

My other problem was, what was up with Juliet? She is described as some mythical, beautiful, charming, Svengali-like creature, although it was implied she actually wasn't those things (I think), and at the end of the day nobody really knew or understood her. I don't know what we are supposed to think about this or what it means about her character (was she happy? What was her relationship with her husband really like? Why didn't she connect with her sister?), and I found it very unsatisfying.

What I really did like was Veronica's explanation of why she left Hawaii, rather than giving the H a chance to make a choice - she knew he'd choose her, and she already felt guilt over their relationship, she knew she couldn't handle the guilt of him losing the hotel on top of it. I get that. Without that really good piece of writing explaining this choice, I would have thought it was ridiculous. Instead it became a choice that, while I felt was misguided and off-base, I can see why it was made.

Heat Wave eBook Karina Halle Reviews

A new Karina Halle book and another wonderful location to add to my bucket list. This time I was completely immersed in the beautiful and tranquil Hawaiian Island of Kauai and the heartbreaking second chance romance of Aussie hotel owner Logan and chef Veronica.

Karina Halle's writing style is flawless and the amount of research she puts into all her books about the location and snippets of local history is evident in reading any one of her books and Heat Wave is no different. In addition to the contemporary romance ( or even her dark reads) I feel like I get a bit of a history lesson with each of her books which is an aspect of her writing that I absolutely love! I have been to Hawaii 3 times and only after reading Heat Wave do I now know why there are so many chickens walking around!

Out of all the books by Karina Halle I have read to date, I think the prologue in Heat Wave is a standout. When I read that last sentence my stomach was in knots and I felt a bit ill. This was a wonderful angst filled read delivered just the way I like it. The slow burn just added to the anticipation and boy was it worth the wait!

As this book is told solely from Veronica's POV ( expect for the epilogue) not knowing why Logan chose the path he did for and seeing him solely from her perspective added to the mystery of this stunning but " grumpy" man. I couldn't wait for all the pieces of the puzzle to come together and connect to what I read in the prologue.

Being an Aussie myself, I could easily picture Logan and hear his Aussie drawl as he spoke. I found him completely irresistible and I wouldn't hesitate taking him up on a personal surfing lesson!

Our heroine Veronica or Ronnie as she preferred to be called was an absolute survivor with such strength of character - with a good dash of stubbornness. Her parents never saw her, believed in her or showed that they loved her. They were her family but not in the way a family should be, so when Ronnie found her people/ her tribe in the staff at Moonwater she was finally able to experience family and love the way she always deserved.

The relationship between Logan and Veronica has an element of "forbidden" but as Veronica said in the opening sentence of the prologue " I saw him first" and despite their history, I was championing their relationship. I completely agreed with Logan's words that it's their life and it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Their love was a beautiful thing and they deserved to enjoy it and celebrate it everyday on the tropical and picturesque paradise of Kauai.
5 Ohana Stars

"Love is never too good to be true because it is the original truth. And everyone deserves it. Everyone.”

Have you ever had a book come into your life at exactly the right time and place? Maybe you’re feeling a little worn down and need a recharge or the long list of meh books you’ve read seems neverending? Or maybe you just miss visiting your sister and her family in beautiful Hawaii, but from the beginning you’re hooked.

"There are a million valid reasons to never think of Logan that way, but the more I tell myself he’s off-limits, the more I shame myself, the more I want to do it."

In a different time and place, Logan would’ve known Veronica was the woman he was destined for from the first moment they met. Talking about where they’d rather be at that very moment left Ronnie with the bone-deep knowledge that Logan was the person for her. Unfortunately after glimpsing her lovely older sister, Logan made a different choice.

Fast forward seven years and there’s a whole lot of water under the bridge. Ronnie’s made a life for herself as cook in Chicago, though recent relationship drama-rama has left her professional future in a precarious place. At the urging of her snotty politician mother Ronnie agrees to work for Logan, hotel owner and widowed brother in law, on the beautiful island of Kauai. Even though Ronnie’s managed to keep Logan in the brother in law box since he married her perfect older sister, how does she manage to keep her distance now that he’s her boss?

Let me start off by being completely honest with you. When I first started this and saw the words “taboo” and “brother in law” in some of the reviews I read, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Was this going to be one of those quickly churned out, smutty smut books a la Unlimited like Ms. Halle’s own Smut (I freaking LOVED that one, btw) references? Or would I be lucky enough to get a kickass story? I should’ve known I was about to get the good stuff.

Heat Wave worked for me in a big way because nothing between Ronnie and Logan was a given and at the same time nothing was insurmountable. I think that’s my roundabout way of saying the obvious issues were handled with care and realistically. Ronnie had some work to do to get to a place where she was comfortable embarking on a relationship of any kind with Logan, both because of what he meant to her and what he’d been to her sister. Once her preconceived and often misinformed anger issues were dealt with, it left her with some pretty strong feelings to deal with, both via her and Logan who, when he finally gives into the banked heat between them, makes no bones about exactly what he wants.

"Hell, heaven, whatever this is, I know it’s something I’ll never come back from. I know I’ll never want to. In my wildest, kinkiest dreams about him, it’s never been this good. "

Karina Hale has outdone herself, and most authors I’ve read if I’m being honest, when it comes to setting the scene. To put it bluntly, I’m normally not a fan of flowery prose and descriptions. Who the hell has the time? Maybe it’s because I happen to have my own Ohana living in Hawaii and am jonesing for a visit or maybe it’s because this is some well written stuff, but every single time I read about a sneaky plumeria or a strutting rooster, it only managed to add to my reading bliss.

In case you can’t tell from my gushing review, I freaking loved this book. The depth of feelings mixed with the beautiful scenery mixed with the perfect amount of angst left me wiping tears with a huge smile on my face. There’s nothing better in my reading world.
