Brunch At Ruby Dl White 9781312890961 Books

DL White has done it: written a wonderful book about friendship and all its foibles in such a way that you don't want the book to end. In Brunch at Ruby's, we meet lifelong friends Debra, Renee and Maxine when all three are a crossroads in their lives: Maxine is convinced she's met Mr. Right (based on standards her mother has instilled in her since her youth--wealthy and cultured and above her station), Debra has been caught in a clinch with her lover and the s*** is about to hit the fan at the school where she's principal (especially since her lover is the Athletic Director at the school) and Renee is struggling to deal with her father and his quickly declining case of dementia.

White takes us through the highs and lows of the women's lives in alternating points of view and does so with a deft hand. There is NO head-hopping here; instead, we have confidently drawn characters whose voices are unique and whose storylines are differentiated enough that we understand all the time whose story we're following. This pleases me as there are far too many books out there told from alternating POV in which less confident authors jump from head to head mid-paragraph and end up confusing readers.

What I love about Brunch at Ruby's is that DL White has taken everyday life and made it so compelling that you don't want to put the book down. This is a story every woman can relate to--the ups and downs of friendships, marriage problems, dealing with ageing parents--and it does so without becoming maudlin or predictable. Loved this book! Looking forward to DL White's next release!

Brunch At Ruby Dl White 9781312890961 Books Reviews

I love a good girlfriend read, especially one that gives you the real deal on the yin and yang of friendship. This is one of many aspects of Brunch at Ruby's that kept me turning the pages. We meet three friends – Renée, Debra, and Maxine - and I found a personal connection with all three characters. Renee wears many hrs in her life caregiver for her ailing father, bookstore owner, & the struggle of coming out of her own shell. There's a sweetness in her I wish I had - only if I didn't have so much Maxine in me! Max is judgmental, hustle-minded, & ALWAYS (!) has a side eye locked and loaded. The glue between these polar opposites of Debra. She, like me, is the 'strong' friend. Always there with a smile & a word, Debra is the character who kept me focused on this novel. She has a secret that hits you within this first 2 chapters!

The author has perfected the art of crafting three different personalities who love each other unconditionally. You leave this novel rooting for all three and the drastic turns their lives make by the last page. Looking forward to digging into the sequel, Dinner at Sam's, very soon. Cop this one immediately!
This novel was a real winner. Maxine, Renee and Debra are three sister friends who have bonded since they were youngsters. Yet, they were always as different as three friends could possibly be. But that didn't take away from their commitment to being friends.

I loved their journey to maturity . The author deftly crafted three main characters who kept me, this avid reader, turning the pages. DL White is a really gifted writer.

It was an easy read. Set in Atlanta where professional African Americans are moving on up, solving family and career problems in an effort to live a good life. These sisters were determined to win. And they did.

Brunching at the fabulous neighborhood Ruby's cafe every month; they took their comfort food seriously. These monthly soirées reminded me of my own girlfriends when we were much younger so I was already invested in this story of love, life and friendship!

What a ride! What a wonderful read! I'd give Brunch at Ruby's ten stars, if possible. I loved, loved this book! The author doesn't disappoint.

Highly recommended if you enjoy Black women's
fiction with a heavy dose of romance.
3.75 stars

Three lifelong friends meet monthly for brunch at a favorite diner in Decatur, GA.
Meet Maxine, Renee, and Debra. Below are how I visualized the 3 main characters. I had a lot of fun getting acquainted, you will too. What I also liked a lot about this writing is that all 3 women are educated, caring women of color and substance. There wasn't the ebonic slang that often times is written into novels about women of color. It could be a writing about white women just as easily.

Maxine Vanessa Williams as Maxine, who is described as fair, beautiful and full of herself.
She is the wealthy owner of a luxury real estate firm who seeks a man with deep pockets
and lots of sex appeal.

Renee Halle Berry with twisty locks as the daughter of a man with early onset Alzheimer's. He
is the only man she has time for while she cares for him and runs the local book store

Debra Phylicia Rashad as the principal at the middle school who has a brief affair with
black-hunk gym teacher (visualize Shemar Moore)

For the men in their lives I liked Billy Brown (How to Get Away With Murder) as Maxine's Joseph, Taye Diggs as Renee's Malcolm, and maybe Rocky Carroll (NCIS) as Debra's hubby Willard. Use your own imagination, I'm just sharing mine.

I liked them all, but found Renee's story the most compelling, as she copes with her father's illness. I've been exactly in her shoes and every emotion she felt resonated with me. It was the most difficult time of my life and it is written with such realistic sincerity. When Renee states that she's not even over grieving for her mom, and now it's like she's already lost her dad too, I could really relate, as that is how it happened for me too. I'm hoping we will hear more about this in book 2, titled Dinner at Sam's which I plan to read soon.

This is a book all women will enjoy, maybe some men too.
