Again thanking your readers for their valuable assistance, Yours, etc. One would have imagined that nobody could take this seriously, for it is obvious that the mystery-story is just the one species of story that can not be told impromptu or altered at the last moment, seeing that it demands the most careful piecing together and the most elaborate dove-tailing. Nevertheless, if you cast your joke upon the waters, you shall find it no joke after many days. This is what I read in the Lyttelton Times, New Zealand "The chain of circumstantial evidence seems fairly irrefragable. From all accounts, Mr. Zangwill himself was puzzled, after carefully forging every link, how to break it. The method ultimately adopted I consider more ingenious than convincing." After that I made up my mind never to joke again, but this good intention now helps to pave the beaten path.

A "locked room" murder mystery from 1895. Often rated as one of the five or ten best of the genre, written by an author who is all but forgotten today. Basically a novella, as a bit long for a short story, yet too short for a novel. The author develops each character a bit more than is really necessary by modern standards, but the overall story is well plotted, believable, and the "why" as well as the "who" and "how" should surprise most readers. I received this free from Amazon for my kindle, but the story is well enough constructed that it would have been worth paying for.Product details

The Big Bow Mystery Israel Zangwill 9781544665542 Books Reviews
It reads like Thackeray, or Bronte, l flowery and way too wordy I was pretty sure I had it before the trial
Interesting classic.
Recommended for mystery readers who are not discouraged by old out of date words. I used my kindle many times for definitions. A satisfying surprise ending.
I saw the film The Verdict and wanted to read the book on which it is based. There are some major character differences and the reason for the crime is vastly different. It was an engaging read and I enjoyed finding the elements portrayed in the film.
A murder of “the man of the people” in a rooming house in a locked room leads the owner to get an ex police officer to break down the door. Ideas flood in from all over about how it was done. A man is caught and convicted, but it has a twist. This is an old time mystery solved in an old way. 4 stars
I was hoping for a tantalizing tale of murder and mystery but while reading, up until the end, was having a hard time remaining interested. I will grant that the ending was unexpected but it was not enough to change my opinion on the story.
I raise an eyebrow at the ending, but the author's preface explains why he went with it.
A young man is murdered in a locked room seemingly without motive. A noted detective, now retired, attempts to solve it as a "last hurrah" before his Scotland Yard rival can convict an innocent man in Victorian England.
While the subject is confounding and tragic, the actual writing is humorous and entertaining, as well as some of the situations the characters encounter. Some courtroom drama stating the opposing cases was a little long but summarized the clues for those willing to try to solve the puzzle. I would read more by this author.
